Work Type: Seeking Freelance and On-Site (Midtown Manhattan) Staff

Description: Press4Kids (P4K) is looking to expand is team of freelance reporters and grow its full-time staff as it heads into the 2013–14 school year. P4K is a producer of children’s news publications, including News-O-Matic, a daily iPad-based newspaper for students at the elementary level.

The corporate mission is to inspire children to read on a daily basis while empowering them with the knowledge that they have the ability to change their world. News-O-Matic covers important national and international news, as well as kid-friendly features and current events. P4K’s on-staff child psychologist vets every story to ensure the safety and security of its readers. The job opportunities are as follows:

Freelance Nonfiction Reporters/Writers

P4K needs enthusiastic authors who can engage reluctant readers and help teach them about the world. Experienced authors of children’s nonfiction must be able to explain complicated concepts to early readers via short articles that are gripping, clearly organized, and age-appropriate for the audience.

As a reporter on the freelance team, you should be able to not only translate world news for children but come up with original features. While the majority of its articles will be assigned from the mainstream news, Press4Kids also looks to its writing team to discover events that will inspire readers with stories of courage and triumph, human and scientific achievement, and kids who make a positive difference.

Because News-O-Matic is a daily newspaper, writers must be able to work on very quick deadlines. Location: Remote.

Full-Time Editor (On-Site)

As Press4Kids continues to grow, it needs an in-house editor who can not only research and write news and feature articles but help manage new products and propose improvements. This includes content for students, as well as materials for parents and educators.

Experience with elementary school students and/or familiarity with the CCSS is a huge plus. Former teachers, curriculum developers, and other former educators are highly encouraged to apply.

Possible candidates should be passionate about the business of news for children and want to play a key role in the development of the company. This position provides tremendous opportunities for growth as P4K expands into new markets.

Editorial and Production Interns (On-Site)

Are you — or someone you know — looking to kick-start a career in educational publishing? Tablet-based publishing is an exciting introduction to the future of the field. Join a fun, creative team and learn on the job while also providing important contributions to children’s newspaper.

P4K is looking for both editorial and production interns for the fall semester. Editorial interns can write, research, and learn about the fast-paced world of daily news on the cutting edge of technology. Production interns will help the Art Director create highly engaging visuals to inspire children on a daily basis. Candidates can contribute anywhere from 15 to 40 hours, depending on schedule and availability.

I actually applied for this job (reporter) when they first launched and while I don't remember the exact pay, it was very good, and the company seemed legit. The biggest problem was that I had to write everything withing a very narrow time frame...being on the west coast is a huge downfall! I think I had to write between 6:30 and 7:30am, which is almost impossible for me as I have children to get ready and take to school. Just an FYI! It may be different now though.
