McGraw-Hill Higher Education's Humanities, Social Sciences, and Languages (HSSL) Group has an exciting opportunity for a Freelance Digital Content Writer to work on new digital products for English and Communication.

The Freelance Digital Content Writer will author new, digital-based teaching and assessment content for Connect, McGraw-Hill's digital teaching and learning environment (connect.mcgraw-hill.com), for Developmental English, Freshman Composition, and/or Communication courses. This position requires a commitment of approximately 20 hours per week and will extend through June of 2014, with the possibility of ongoing work beyond June 2014.

Essential Accountabilities

Author teaching and assessment content (test items; learning resources) for a Developmental English, Freshman Composition, or Communication digital project in accordance with detailed project guidelines.
Closely collaborate with McGraw-Hill editorial team members, including the Development Editor, the Lead Digital Content Editor, and Digital Product Analyst.
Receive feedback on and revise digital manuscript for editorial quality.
As appropriate, aid in the refinement of detailed project guidelines, such as content style sheets, to ensure the project meets the required specifications.

Required Experience

Bachelor's degree, preferably in English, communication, or related subject. Master's degree a plus.
A minimum of 2 years' experience writing effective assessment content and/or instructional material for college-level courses, with a focus in digital content development.
Teaching experience at the college level, particularly in Developmental English, Freshman Composition, or Communication, a plus.
Must be digitally-inclined and comfortable learning and adapting to new technologies, including authoring tools.
Deadline-driven, self-directed, motivated, and willing to take the initiative to complete tasks and projects.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to receive feedback well and implement as directed.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office product suite.

We are looking for creative, motivated Content Writers to join our Content Development team. In this role, you will work closely with Product Analysts and Content Editors to write fun, elegantly-crafted language arts items for grades 2-6. This is a part-time contract position (20-30 hours per week) with the opportunity to work remotely.

Responsibilities
  • Write sentences and paragraphs for use in a wide variety of problem types, including fill-in-the-blank, proofreading, and matching.
  • Create dictionary definitions for spelling and vocabulary words.
  • Brainstorm topics for imaginative, age-appropriate sentences and paragraphs.
  • Format content according to guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the overall quality and consistency of language arts content.

  • Copy edit to improve formatting and style.

Kamehameha Schools (KS) has an Editor position available with the Strategic Planning & Implementation (SPI) Division at Kawaiahaʻo Plaza on Oʻahu.  The deadline to apply is:  10/13/2013.


Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Publishing, Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian language, English, Journalism, Education, or related field

OR

In lieu of Bachelor's Degree, HS Diploma or GED equivalent and at least 5 years experience in editing or publishing will be accepted.

Summary of Minimum Requirements:

 * 3 - 5 years of related work experience.
 * At least 5 years experience in editing or publishing with HS Diploma or GED equivalent.
 * Experience editing and producing books, multimedia products, and educational materials.
 * Knowledge of editorial style, writing techniques, and editorial processes.
 * Working knowledge of graphic design and book layout.
 * Working knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history, and language.
 

Summary of Duties:

 * Assists the Strategic Planning and Implementation Division in acquiring, evaluating, editing, and producing books and multimedia products to disseminate research, evaluation, and KS reports to a wide variety of internal and external  audiences.
 * Works closely with authors, contributors, designers, and other editors to prepare manuscripts for print and multimedia publication.
 * Assists in maintaining production schedules and project status reports.
 * Facilitates the copyediting process and maintains the “master set” during proofreading. Establishes working relationship with authors and facilitates author communications and meeting schedules.
 * Serves as a resource on approved styles for SPI publications (modifications of APA and  Chicago).
