POSITION: Environmental Education Outreach Online Learning Specialist and Implementer Post-Doctoral Associate, full-time position, 40 hrs/wk, non-tenure track


STARTING DATE:By October 15, 2013


RESPONSIBILITIES:                    
This position is an “outreach post-doc” in that the successful candidate will provide guidance and  leadership in enhancing the online learning opportunities of a major environmental education outreach project. The online courses and related learning opportunities are being offered through EPA’s National Environmental Education Training Program—“EECapacity”—in collaboration with the Cornell University Civic Ecology Lab. Specific duties include:

• Develop and implement two new online courses: (1) Environmental Education: Finding Common Ground with Faith-Based, Military, and the Professional Sports Communities and (2) Environmental Education: Facing the Reality of Climate Change.
• Implement one previously developed online course: Measuring Environmental Education Outcomes.
• Investigate and recommend online platforms and pedagogical strategies appropriate for different types of online classes and related learning opportunities being offered through EECapacity and Cornell’s Civic Ecology Lab.
• Review the entire suite of online courses being offered through EECapacity and work with supervisor to upgrade course materials (e.g., through adding multi-media components) and to convert courses to self-taught format with accompanying opportunities for social networking.
• Develop long-term online learning and business model for continuation of all EECapacity online courses beyond EPA funding.
  

Supervisor of individual hired will provide many of the materials for course development based on existing EECapacity and EPA resources, although person hired will be expected to seek out additional learning resources. Key participants in online courses include professionals in environmental education; youth and community development; museums, botanic gardens and zoos; and natural resources management, including in cities. University students also commonly enroll in EECapacity online courses. Thus far, EECapacity has developed or is developing 7 online courses. Individual hired will work with supervisor and online course assistant to enhance these courses and convert them to self-learning format as appropriate. Team participation with the EECapacity leadership group and Civic Ecology Lab graduate students and staff  is expected.  Appointment is one year. Location: Although living in or near Ithaca NY is preferable, supervisor will consider applicants living elsewhere who have a solid plan for ongoing communication and progress updates for supervisor. Through being part of EECapacity, position provides an opportunity to work with a national network of researchers and practitioners at the forefront of environmental education scholarship and practice, including in cities.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:
·         PhD in environmental education or related field (e.g., education, natural resources, communication, environmental psychology)
·         Demonstrated ability to develop and implement environmental education and/or related courses
·         Familiarity with online learning and associated platforms and technologies
·         Familiarity with use of multi-media resources in online learning
Preferred:
·         Familiarity with educational evaluation and research (preferred)

Experienced item writers needed: college-level biology (telecommute)

Description: We are an established publisher of college-level science textbooks and supplements. We’re currently developing items to accompany an intro biology book for biology majors. Content includes cells, genetics, evolution, diversity, plant form and function, animal form and function, and ecology.

Writers will have access to the forthcoming edition of our textbook, as well as an item bank created for the previous edition, and will be asked to supplement existing items with new ones to parallel the revised text. In addition, accuracy and relevance of existing items will need to be checked against the new edition of the textbook.

Required experience: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in biology. Master’s or Ph.D. preferred. Three or more years’ experience writing and/or editing college-level science items. College-level teaching experience ideal but not essential for seasoned item writers.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking a Writer/Associate Editor for its award-winning education project, Teaching Tolerance. The project is dedicated to helping K-12 teachers promote equity and respect in the classroom and beyond. The project publishes a semiannual magazine distributed at no charge to over 450,000 educators, produces free multimedia curriculum packages, and operates a website, www.teachingtolerance.org.  Teaching Tolerance magazine has won more than twenty EdPress awards; the project’s documentary films have been nominated for three Academy Awards.  The Writer/Associate Editor will write blogs, articles, emails and web copy; copyedit and fact-check print and online publications, conduct research and work closely with the TT team.  The ideal candidate has both editorial and educational experience and is committed to anti-racism and anti-bias education.
Responsibilities:

• Writes articles as assigned for Teaching Tolerance magazine.
• Writes blogs pegged off current news and related to education and anti-bias issues.
• Writes clear and succinct copy for web pages.
• Works on informational and promotional email campaigns.
• Performs copyediting of departmental publications, including lessons plans and curriculum, as part of daily routine. 
• Participates in departmental meetings and collaborative projects

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Bachelors degree in one of the liberal arts, communications, journalism or related field.
• Two years of writing and editing experience.
• Familiarity with and commitment to educational equity issues and/or a sophisticated understanding of multiculturalism and diversity issues.
• Superb editing skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and work in a team environment.
• Experience in educational writing a plus.
