Part-time Bilingual Curriculum Writer – Training and Certification (The New Teacher Project)

Flexible location The New Teacher Project (TNTP) helps school districts and states fulfill the promise of public education by ensuring that all students—especially those from high-need communities—get excellent teachers. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP is driven by the knowledge that although great teachers are the best solution to educational inequality, the nation’s education systems do not sufficiently prioritize the goal of effective teachers for all. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to find, develop and keep great teachers and achieve reforms that promote effective teaching in every classroom. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 37,000 teachers—mainly through its highly selective Teaching Fellows™ programs—benefiting an estimated 5.9 million students. TNTP has also released a series of acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the nation’s teacher workforce, most recently including The Widget Effect: Our National Failure to Acknowledge and Act on Differences in Teacher Effectiveness (2009). Today TNTP is active in more than 40 cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, New York, and Oakland, among others. For more information, please visit http://www.tntp.org/.

We are currently seeking a part-time Bilingual Curriculum Writer for our Training and Certification business line. The Bilingual Curriculum Writer will be a TNTP employee and may work from a home office anywhere in the U.S. for 20 hours a week. The Bilingual Curriculum Writer will be expected to be available for conference calls during regular business hours, but the hours are flexible and the majority of the work may be completed outside of regular business hours. This position is available immediately and will conclude upon completion of the project.

The Teaching for Results Content Seminar Series Curriculum
In California, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Maryland, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas, TNTP has partnered with school districts to create and administer programs that not only provide new teacher training, but also recommend new teachers for state certification. Participants in these programs, the District of Columbia Practitioner Teacher Program, the Louisiana Practitioner Teacher Program, the Maryland Practitioner Teacher Program, the Oakland Practitioner Teacher Program, Rhode Island Teaching Fellows, Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program and the Texas Teaching Fellows, earn full state certification by completing TNTP's Teaching for Results Seminar Series, successfully completing a year of full-time teaching, and participating in district mentorship programs.

Our programs are distinguished by both their emphasis on alternate route teachers and their explicit focus on teaching in high-need schools and subject areas. Upon completion of the program, all candidates meet federal "highly qualified" requirements. To date, TNTP has certified more than 1,450 teachers in four states (the DC and RI programs were just launched in 2009). In Texas, 92 percent of new program participants in 2008 reported feeling effective in raising student achievement.

The Teaching for Results Seminar Series curriculum is the foundation of our Practitioner Teacher Programs, and we are currently in the process of writing the manuals for the content area of Bilingual Education.

The approach that the Training and Certification business line uses in developing curricular products is grounded in the belief that teachers’ efficacy in closing the achievement gap is facilitated by the production and implementation of high-quality, research-based pre-service and in-service curricular materials. This approach entails developing an initial product, implementing it, and revising it until it reaches a threshold of stability and excellence approved by key stakeholders: the developers and the users.

Role and Responsibilities
The Bilingual Curriculum Writer will be responsible for the research and development of the new bilingual education training manuals for the Content Seminar series.

Specifically, the Bilingual Curriculum Writer will be responsible for:
  • Researching and reviewing state and professional standards for Bilingual education
  • Outlining an entire course for Bilingual education that spans 16 sessions (each session is 3 hours long)
  • Developing session objectives and corresponding curricular activities that integrate research-based best practices in instructional planning and delivery, content pedagogy, and assessment into each session
  • Producing a facilitator manual and participant manual at the end of the project period for Bilingual education
  • Documenting references and obtaining copyright permissions for materials used
  • Participating in an iterative curriculum design process with TNTP staff members
    • Responding to staff feedback and incorporating feedback into course revisions as part of a collaborative design process with TNTP staff members
  • Collaborating with other members of the curriculum design team including the graphic designers, proofers, and TNTP design staff
This position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to have a profound impact on how new teachers are trained to teach in high-need schools.

Qualifications
We are seeking candidates who believe deeply in our organization's mission, thrive in an entrepreneurial and dynamic environment, and who display a record of achievement. Successful candidates will also demonstrate:
  • Interest in and support of alternative routes to teacher certification
  • Teaching Licensure/Certification and at least two years teaching experience in high-need schools in Bilingual education
  • Track record of raising student achievement in high-need schools
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing a backward design planning approach, including experience with analyzing state standards, setting measurable goals, designing assessments, and selecting appropriate instructional strategies
  • Previous experience researching and developing curriculum for teacher training or professional development (preferred)
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills
  • Strong writing ability
  • Extraordinary attention to detail
  • Strong research skills
  • The ability to work well independently
  • The ability to work effectively with others at all levels of an organization
  • Comfort working with computers and strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Microsoft Word (with the ability to create tables and charts within Word documents) preferred
Compensation
The salary for this position is $13,000 for approximately 20 hours of work a week for approximately 5-6 months, or upon completion of the project. The salary will be paid out in three equal installments; $6000 after the mid-point deliverable of approximately 6-7 sessions; $6000 after the remaining sessions have been completed, and then a final $1000 installment after copyright permissions and production queries have been resolved. This job is based at the central office in Brooklyn, NY or from a home office anywhere in the U.S. We offer a motivated team of colleagues as well as the opportunity to impact the direction of a growing, mission-driven company that is committed to the success of our nation’s children.

It's been around for quite a while. I've posted for them before, but only once. I think they might be branching out a bit. They used to just do consulting and teacher recruitment.

Last time they sent me a job to post, they said they received a good response, so here they are again! :)
