A bit off education, but definitely related


The Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking a Managing Editor to assume a key role in our Digital Media and Publications department. Focused primarily on Shakespeare Quarterly (SQ), a scholarly journal committed to publishing essays in the range of Shakespeare scholarship, the Managing Editor works closely with the Director of Digital Access, SQ Editor, contributors, publishers, and department staff to ensure the journal's high editorial standards are met. As part of his or her regular duties, the Managing Editor is responsible for supervising the editorial work on manuscripts, ensuring that accurate fact checking and licensing has been completed, communicating regularly with the authors and publishers, managing the journal's budget, and serving as the primary contact for SQ. As the Folger representative for SQ, the Managing Editor participates in the development and support of the online community and serves as a liaison to the World Shakespeare Bibliography editor. The position of Managing Editor requires a Master's in English or related field, with specialized knowledge of Shakespeare and/or early modern literature. A Ph.D. in English is highly desired. At least five years of experience in scholarly editing and publications, with supervisory experience, and a proven ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize the editorial production process is required. Applicants must be able to edit, copyedit, analyze, and proofread literary and scholarly texts, especially those related to Shakespeare and to the early modern period, and must have developed the ability to read and understand complex scholarly arguments. This position requires excellent verbal, written, research, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Latin and/or a modern romance language is preferred.
